It looks like the Studenthuset idea is being more accepted since AF Bostäder has built one of their own. This little house has made it around the world! I saw it on the Tiny House blog and I'm sure it made it on more than one student living blog and many articles.
The problem is a big one for students and young people in Sweden since they can't afford to move in to a new apartment, considering the building prices here. The idea that a house of 15 square meters is permit-free, legal to live in and somewhat encouraged in Sweden is fantastically unique and should be taken advantage of more that it does.
One of the problems, though is that most people that have a yard to put one in, don't need the extra income or the hassle of having a student living so close. The students have bad reputations though, based on late night drinking and singing in the university towns here, so this has a tendency to dissuade people from renting to a student as well.
The other might be the price. We at Microhus build these tiny houses and there are as many different trades and functions in these houses as in a larger one, so I generally inform my clients that 30 square meters only costs 20% more than 15 square meters because of all the different building moments that go into building a mini-villa like this. They are as well built as a high end houses, following the energy norms for the region and the moisture rules for Sweden. This leads to a high cost per square meter which is usually around 1500 Euros per square meter, which is cheap for a villa, but expensive for a "Friggebod"
Its the Ikea mentality again, which leads people to believe that things a cheaper than they are.

Här är några bilder på studenthuset nummer 2 som vi byggda i lärkytterpanel och ek golv.

The house was sold to a couple that wanted their stuga back from their daughter who had moved in to it. I'm not sure if they are going to use it themselves, or move her out of their summer house and into the Studenthuset.
We tried to deliver it but the crane truck wasn't big enough to lift it over the trees and a garage, so we have to call in a mobile crane that has the reach and lift to move it. We set it down in the neighbors driveway for now and will pick it up tomorrow and put it in place.

Rektorn gav oss "thumbs up"

LU Rektorn Per Eriksson lovade att göra allt han kan för att hjälpa oss utveckla Studenthuset.
Det är en bra ide, sa han.

Jag tänkte sedan att om detta blir godkänd av samhället som en bra alternativ till Studentboendet, så kanske man kan utveckla ett lånesystem som gör det möjligt för studenterna att köpa sina bostäder för att sälja de sedan till en vinst istället för slösa bort studiemedel på hyran.
Tänk om man skulle bli skuld fri när man hade pluggat färdigt!

Jag påminde honom att vi gjorda detta skjälva utan stora finansiering och att det skulle vara bra om AF Bostäder hade beställt 30 st eller så utplacerade runt om på universitetet och ut i kommunens mark. Det underlättar trycket på termin starten, och de kan man flytta på i fall att behovet är löst.

Student Blog-second night and last, for now

Second night in the cabin last night. The rain dampened the visitors early in the evening, but as the evening wore on I got a trickle of interested visitors, including one drunk but extremely friendly young man coming from the ball at AF Borgen. I didn't get a whole lot of sense out of him except that he liked the house very much.


I crawled into bed a very tired worker to the driving beat of the ball, which was still very much going on. It was the sort of driving beat that you don't hear so much as you feel. I'm not sure but I think it went on till about 4 a.m. I woke up periodically and heard that same heavy pulse. Who knows what it did to twist my dreams around!

At some point there was a bit of a crash or a bang, and my power went off. I figured that one of the revelers crashed into the cabin's power line or pulled the plug or something -- not sure. Kenton came by in the morning as I was headed out and switched it back on for me. But it meant that my morning tea had to wait till I came over to Kungshuset.

It will be good to head home for a while this morning and check in on the cat, who I know will be missing me. And it will be good to be back together with her tonight. But I have to say, it was quite convenient these last two days having my bed not more than 25 meters or so from the building where I work! Meanwhile my being there gave the cabin a "lived-in" look that, I think, helped draw more visitors.

I will have to go by again this evening to greet the person who is taking over the house sitting from me!
